“You know as well as I do that he has a couple of guys around him that won’t go for this. Chief of Staff Realing for one. He’s not going to go for anything that might taint his man for the next elections, and going after some ghost organization bent on world control is not something he’s going to allow. If you have to tell Realing what it is you want to see the man about, he’s not going to let you get anywhere near him.”

“First one I thought of, too. And if we do have to recommend going after any foreign country types, State isn’t going to want any part of that, either. Hampton’s been a long time friend of the president and he won’t want to let anything like taking on other countries get started.”

“I don’t know, Paul. Is there any other way we can get something written up on this and then get it included in some briefing or other? We could do something on one page with very big letters?”

“Yeah, I know what you’re saying, but the agendas don’t allow for anything like that. And anything that would go into briefing papers gets eagle-eyed by a lot of other people before it gets to the man. Check back into as many of these incidents as you can to see if we can tie any of them together with more than just suspicions.

Put out feelers with our own people in the field and find out what they might be hearing. See what you can get with facts and details and then write up a brief that is very succinct and short. Not one of our normal 100 page jobs. Something the President could read in five minutes that would give him a real good snapshot of what’s happening.

“In the meantime, I’ll get around to our surveillance groups and see what I can find. Maybe someone’s seen something that they don’t really understand and they just need some prompting. We can’t rush this thing, but we can’t sit back on our hands, either. Let’s plan on getting back on this, unless something pops out of the woodwork first, by the end of next week. Friday next, say 5 p.m. again here at the office?”

“Okay. Sounds good to me, Paul. And I think we should keep what we find quiet for a while. You?”

“Oh, yeah. The fewer eyes on this for now, the better. By the way, what I said before,
